Eris’s discovery is what led to the vote. When astronomer Mike Brown found it in 2005, he announced that Eris was the tenth planet. (At the time Pluto was the ninth.) This caused an uproar and set off a fierce debate. Many astronomers considered Eris a big KBO, not a planet. But Pluto is also a big KBO, so if Eris wasn’t a planet, how could Pluto be one? On the other hand, if Pluto was the ninth planet and Eris the tenth, what about all the other big KBOs being discovered? Are all of them planets, too, or just some of them? Which ones exactly? That’s when the IAU stepped in, inventing the dwarf planet category and redefining the word planet.
